Description
I'm a big fan of the new costume designs for the old cast overall, but the Nina one really blew me away when I saw it. How are you even supposed to compete with that? (I guess that sentence can be read in two ways, both equally valid).
For this piece I focused on motion (in the dress, composition) and trying to have big blocks of the same value, to make it both read clearer and be more interesting to look at, in an abstract sense.
Like often is the case I was introducing way too many colours at an early stage in the painting, and ended up having to backtrack and remove stuff to keep it clean.
Often I just mash at the start and hope things combo, but keep it on one layer and work from there (which makes changes that much more tedious, especially when considering foreground/character/background). I've been going to a mixed approach for the last two paintings instead, where I've been unusually structured. Starting with gesture/lineart, working from basic shapes in b&w towards the details. I've also made a very explicit commitment to keep the pure blacks/whites away for as long as possible, working within 30-70% black for the first few hours.
